The department possesses the following facilities:

1) Analytical facilities:

  1. a) High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)

  • HPLC is used for research purpose in the department.
  • It is used for the determination of antibiotic residues, pesticide residues and mycotoxins in foods of animal origin such as milk, meat and eggs.
  1. b) Gas Chromatography (GC)

  • Gas Chromatography is used for outbreak investigation and research purpose in the department.
  • It is used for the determination of pesticide residues in feed, stomach contents, milk, meat and water samples as well as mycotoxins particularly aflatoxins in feed samples.
  1. Molecular facilities:
  2. a) Thermal cycler

  • Thermal cycler is used for disease investigation and research work in the department.
  • The conventional PCR as well as Reverse transcription PCR protocols for various economically important diseases of livestock and poultry such as haemorrhagic septicaemia, theileriosis, babesiosis, PPR, contagious ecthyma, sheeppox, goatpox, lumpy skin disease, classical swine fever, swine pox, New Castle disease, infectious bursal disease have been standardized in the department.
  1. b) Real time PCR

  • Real time PCR is used for disease investigation and research work in the department.
  • Real time PCR protocols for the detection of Avian influenza virus and African swine fever virus have been standardized in the department. 
  1. Serological facility:
  2. a) ELISA Reader

 

  • ELISA reader is used for the serological testing of the samples.
  1. Bacteriological testing facilities
  2. a) Vitek® system

  • VITEK® system is used for disease investigation and research work in the department.
  • It is used for the identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing of bacterial isolates.
  1. b) Tempo® system

  • Tempo® system is used for the enumeration of quality indicator organisms such as coli, total viable counts, coliform counts etc. in foods of animal origin and environmental samples.
  1. c) Automated Gram’s staining system

  • Automated Gram’s staining system is used for disease investigation and research purpose in the department.
  • It is used for the Gram’s staining of bacterial smears.
  1. Sample storage facilities:
  2. a) Deep freeze (-80º C)

  • Deep freeze (-80º C) facility available in the department is used for the storage of biological samples, nucleic acids and lyophilized bacterial cultures.
