Sheep Farm

About

The Department Animal Genetics and Breeding has been maintaining Harnali (Synthetic) and Munjal sheep populations at LUVAS campus. Total two state research schemes are ongoing at sheep farm with following objectives:

  1. To multiply and stabilize the Harnali-Synthetic sheep for superior carpet wool and growth which produce lambs weighing 20 kg at 6 months of age.
  2. To conserve and multiply Munjal Sheep to produce lambs of 25 kg weight at six months of age.
  3. To evolve a suitable selection criterion for improvement of ewe productivity and reproductive efficiency.
  4. Dissemination of superior germplasm to farmers and institutions.

Harnali Sheep

  • This is synthetic population of crossbreds having 62.5% exotic inheritance (Russian Merino and Corridale breeds) and 37.5 % indigenous inheritance (Nali breed).
  • This is most popular and suitable to agro-climatic conditions of Haryana.
  • Current herd strength is 300.
  • The average birth weight is 3.39 kg.
  • The average weaning and six month weights are 14.18 and 20.10 kg, respectively.
  • The average adult weights of male and female are 46.0 and 31.82 kg, respectively
  • The staple length and fiber diameter of wool are 5.80 cm and 25.55 µ, respectively, whereas modulation % is 25.86%.

Munjal Sheep

  • Current herd strength is 100.
  • The average birth weight is 3.57 kg.
  • The average weaning and six month weights are 15.04 and 20.40 kg, respectively.
  • The average adult weights of male and female are 50.33 and 34.84 kg, respectively
  • The staple length and fiber diameter of wool are 6.99 cm and 37.22 µ, respectively, whereas modulation % is 60.54%.
